#Plant2015

Hello Everyone!

Ah yes its finally Spring! The plants are blooming, the sun is shining, America's pastime (Baseball the best sport ever, duh) is finally back! However, if you live on a farm, you know most importantly it is planting season! Every farmer is in the field at dawn trying to get their crops in on time. Which if you really think about it, there really is not that much time time to waste. Harvest season on average is about 2.5 weeks long, and if they do not get all the crops in, it can lead to late season chemical application and late season harvesting. The sad part is a lot of people do not understand the time put into planting. To prove the basic person that planting can cause a lot to happen in such small amounts of time, lets do some math.

On average planting season is 2.5 weeks. If you have 1,000 acres to plant and 2.5 weeks to get it done: 1,000/2.5= 400 acres per week. If you compare it to Harvest season, it is a much smaller time frame. Harvesting can take up to a month or even a month and a half. (depending on how much land of course, for example we have 4,000 acres so things get delayed and enlongated as you can tell.) So if a person has 1 month or 4 weeks to harvest 1,000 acres, 1,000/4= 250 acres harvested per week. Planting definitely wins the time crunch.

Another thing a lot of people do not realize that it is not as simple as putting a seed into the ground. A lot of farmers apply anhydrous to the soil first, then while they are planting someone usually leads the way with a field cultivator, which just requires more people and more time. So the next time you drive by and see someone planting your food, make sure you thank them.
